FAMI The New Facial Reconstruction

An article about FAMI caught my eye, this week, in my latest copy of Aesthetic Medicine . This looks at the issue of the past use of fat injections and how this latest technique seeks to avoid many of the issues surrounding the much more invasive surgical type of facelift and the problems that surrounded the use of deeper tissue fat injection, which were used to restore volume.

The technique is pioneered by Dr Roger Amar and involves taking the patients own stem cells from fat deposits, refining them and then using these in multiple small injections across the area to be treated. As people age, they lose the stem cells in the face but not in the lower body, so fat cells are taken from the hip, knee and abdomen (tummy). This is done under a local anaesthetic.

This is not a procedure that can be done by anyone other than an experienced cosmetic doctor in this particular field. The technique provides genuine skin rejuvenation without complications or using any chemicals and fillers. As the skin is injected with one’s own fatty connective tissue, this reduces the risk of complications or allergic reactions. The recovery process, it is suggested, is minimal with only minor bruising and swelling involved so you can resume regular activities anywhere from a week to two weeks after the procedure.
